If Tim Burton Made a Cake

Film project in the style of a famous auteur

Overview

In my final year of high school, I was assigned to create a film in the style of a famous auteur. I chose Tim Burton. This film documents the process of baking a cake in a creative style similar to Tim Burton, utilizing German Expressionism (shadows, angles, etc.), and the desaturated, blue hues of each shot. Even the song ‘Moon Dance’ from the film The Corpse Bride, is by Danny Elfman, who frequently composes music for Tim Burton’s films.

Process

This film followed a shot list that was designed to reflect Tim Burton’s style. Low-level blue lighting was used to help create the shadows commonly found in German Expressionism as well as the blue hues seen in Burton’s films. There was a bit of staging and set decoration involving the ingredients used to bake the cake.
